NameVIDEO - INTERNATIONAL RESPONSES TO DEMOCRATISATION IN THE ARAB WORLD - PANEL DISCUSSION
DescriptionAustralians have closely followed recent moves toward democratisation in North Africa and the Middle East. These events have once again tested the international community’s capacity to balance national sovereignty with the preservation of human rights, and in particular its responsibility to protect populations from grave violations of these rights.

In this video a panel of experts explores the consequences of regime change in Tunisia and Egypt, and uprising in Libya and Bahrain, for international relations.

• How effective has the UN been in responding to this unrest given its responsibility to maintain international peace and security?
• What are the consequences of the UN-sanctioned ‘no-fly-zone’ in Libya, enforced by NATO and enacted under the principle of a ‘Responsibility to Protect’?
• What impact will these actions have for the international community’s approach to internal conflict and upholding human rights in future?
• In what ways has the US-led intervention in Iraq shaped the US response to the Libyan crisis?
• What role, if any, should Australia play in upholding the principle of ‘Responsibility to Protect’?

Expert panellists will include:
• Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AO QC, Honorary Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne
• Mr Daniel Flitton, Diplomatic Editor, The Age
• Dr Sally Totman, Senior Lecturer in Middle East Studies, Deakin University
