Compared with European nations such as France and the UK, Germany is a relatively new country, founded only in 1871.  It was formally divided in 1949, and developed as two states – the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic - for more than four decades.  The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, led to hopes that the two states would one day be reunited.
