For 55 years, the black African population of South Sudan – consisting of Christians and traditional believers – resisted the Arab-Muslim dominated state that emerged after decolonization. In 2011, the nine million South Sudanese successfully seceded to establish a sovereign state the size of France. Peter Run will discuss three aspects of this march from subjugation to statehood.
In his address, Peter will
· give a brief background to the emergence of South Sudanese as “a people” entitled to self-government.
· cover post-conflict peace-building and state-building infused with observations from his month-long stay in South Sudan (December 2011 – January 2012).
· discuss the role of South Sudanese Diaspora (of which Australia has the majority outside Africa) in the state-building efforts.
Peter Run is a PhD Candidate and tutor in the School of Political Science and International Studies, University of Queensland. Besides his academic research on South Sudan, he also writes about the new country in Australian and international newspapers as well as online fora.
