About Quarterly Access

Quarterly Access (QA) is the national publication of the youth networks of the Australian Institute of International Affairs. It is an entirely volunteer based publication providing opportunity for students and young professionals to publish in-depth, high-quality articles on global issues of importance. We aim to help inform and foster debate amongst a new generation of leaders.

All the views expressed in this publication are solely those of the individual writers. While providing a forum for discussion and debate on international issues, the AIIA does not formulate its own institutional views, and eschews political bias. There are several ways to read QA. Hard copies are distributed to AIIA branches, as well as university libraries, and other student hot-spots across Australia. If your library doesn’t have a copy, get them to order it in.

Quarterly Access explained

QA builds on a prestigious legacy: QA was developed by members of the Australian Institute of International Affairs. Established in 1924 as the Australian counterpart to Britain’s Royal Institute of International Affairs – Chatham House – the AIIA is an independent, non-profit organisation that has proudly promoted understanding of international affairs throughout Australia. QA brings this heritage to a new generation.

QA does so accessibly: the traditional place for in-depth discussion is in academic journals. While frequently excellent, these journals are also often expensive,  and not written in a manner engaging or accessible for a general audience. QA is aimed at the reader who wants more than what is in the newspapers and blogs, but hasn’t always the time or interest for scholarly journals.

QA provides a needed stepping stone: QA publishes non-established writers. Those at the cutting of research, such as postgraduate students unearthing new material and furthering our understanding of global problems, are typically unknown as writers.

QA values academic skills: Australia is full of students and young people with insights to share, but academic journals are difficult to break into, and simply creating a blog does not guarantee readership, or provide the guidance given by a devoted editorial team. There are several excellent online magazines and news portals in Australia, but they usually insist on short articles, with little scholarly referencing and virtually no theory. QA, however, fosters its writers’ academic skills in a way that helps expand public debate, setting us apart from comparable publications in Australia.

QA creates community: everything QA does – from the places we distribute our print copies to, the institutions we collaborate with, the organisations we seek advertising from and the audience we target – helps to create a community among Australians who are passionate about international affairs.

QA cuts across mediums: our magazine is available in print, on the web, and through social networking sites. Someone who writes for QA gets their article distributed as widely as possible within our budget, and our readers can choose a variety of ways to enjoy our magazine.

QA is part of a dynamic network of young volunteers: QA was created by volunteers within Access, the youth network of the AIIA. QA is just one of many Access initiatives, such as the renowned International Careers Conference, regular expert speaking events, a mentorship program, professional development days and the e-newsletter Monthly Access.

 

How to support QA

Read QA: most important to us is that growing numbers of people continue to read QA and benefit from the material. All issues are available online: http://www.aiia.asn.au/qa

Engage with QA: become part of our effort to popularise in-depth discussion of international politics. We welcome responses to articles, feedback and wider involvement. QA is also expanding its online and social networking presence to allow greater interactivity.

Submit an article: QA is always looking out for further submissions. If you are a student or young professional interested in international politics, and have not been prominently published before, submit an article. If you disagree with an article in QA, respond.

We provide a space for various styles of writing: academic, journalistic, travel, interviews and reviews. Submission guidelines are available here, or contact us to find out more.

Talk about QA: help spread the word. As a non-profit publication run entirely by volunteers, QA’s marketing is done through word of mouth, online networking, and developing relationships with trusted contacts in relevant institutions. In particular, university staff and student leaders can tell students of this publishing opportunity.

Such assistance has helped, and will continue to help, QA expand its audience and submission base.

Help distribute QA: print copies of QA are being distributed to AIIA branches around Australia and university libraries. If you know of somewhere that could do with a copy of QA, such as a student café or graduate lounge, please let us know.

Sponsor QA: It provides an opportunity for organisations to place advertisements. Current prices are $200 for a half page ad, $100 for a quarter page ad. Back and inside covers are reserved for major sponsors. QA only accepts advertising from organisations relevant to QA’s mission. Examples of relevant organisations include universities, travel agencies, book publishers, NGOs, government departments, think tanks, and other media. QA will not accept any form of advertising or sponsorship that risks compromising the AIIA’s position of political independence and non-partisanship.
