A special event in association with the Australia China Business Council and the Melbourne Writers Festival:

No nation in Asia matters more to Australia than China.  What happens there in the years to come is crucial to our own future.  Understanding the forces at work in this vast and often mysterious country is essential as the 21st century unfolds.

No individual in the West is better placed to explain the ins and outs of China than Jonathan Fenby as a highly regarded commentator and author of 13 books, including the acclaimed new 'Penguin History of Modern China'.  The Editor of 'The South China Morning Post' from 1995 to 1999, he is a former foreign correspondent and Editor of 'The Observer' and Reuters World Service.  He has held senior positions at 'The Economist', 'The Independent' and the 'Guardian'.

Currently living in the UK, Mr Fenby is a founder and China director of Trusted Sources, which advises clients and the markets to identify investment opportunities, risks and trends in emerging markets, as well as considering their influence on the global economy.

In June, he wrote in the 'Guardian': "Perhaps it is the country's size, ancient civilisation and tumultuous modern history, or perhaps the result of its spectacular economic growth since Deng Xiaoping unleashed market-led economic reform 30 years ago.  Whatever the reason, commentary on China seems all too easily trapped in hyperbole."

Mr Fenby has been made a Commander of the British Empire and a Knight of the French Order of Merit for services to journalism.

The Melbourne Writers Festival will take place from August 27 to September 5.  We are privileged that Jonathan Fenby can join us in discussion.
