Australia's security and prosperity are critically dependent on the quality of its relations with other countries in an increasingly interdependent world.  Whoever forms the Australian Government later this month will need to deal with a range of challenges from our engagement in Afghanistan and the rise of China and India in our rapidly evolving region to those issues closely associated with foreign policy such as immigration and asylum seekers, and the matter of climate change.  Where Kevin Rudd was a foreign policy wonk, Julia Gillard and her opponent Tony Abbott are limited in their international knowledge, experience and interest.  Foreign policy is hardly a feature of this campaign, despite its compelling importance to Australia's future.

To debate the challenges facing Australia in the world, and to examine how the major parties are responding - or failing to do so - we are pleased to welcome back to AIIAV two prominent thinkers in international relations:

Prof. Joseph Anthony Camilleri is Professor of International Relations and founding Director of the Centre for Dialogue, La Trobe University.  Recent books include 'Worlds in Transition: Evolving Governance Across a Stressed Planet' (Edward Elgar 2009), 'Regionalism in the New Asia Pacific Order' (Edward Elgar 2003), and 'States, Markets and Civil Society in Asia Pacific' (Edward Elgar 2000).  He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences, and chairs the editorial committee of the scholarly journal 'Global Change, Peace and Security', and serves on numerous international boards and advisory councils.  Prof. Camilleri has researched, lectured and given evidence to government and other enquiries on issues of governance, human rights, cultural and religious dialogue, development, environment, and security.  He is the recipient of several national and international grants and awards, including the Order of Australia Medal.Prof. He is the recipient of several national and international grants and awards, including the Order of Australia Medal.

Dr Paul Monk holds a PhD in international relations from the Australian National University.  He joined the Australian Department of Defence in 1989 and the Defence Intelligence Organisation in 1990, where he later became head of China analysis and chairman of the inter-agency working group on China.  In 2000 he cofounded Austhink, a critical-thinking skills training and consulting firm in Melbourne.  He has published more than 100 essays on public, international and historical affairs.  His books include 'Thunder from the Silent Zone: Rethinking China' (Scribe, 2005); ‘Sonnets to a Promiscuous Beauty: A Homage to the Western Canon' (Barrallier Books, 2006); and 'The West in a Nutshell' which traces the beginnings of human presence on the planet, through the emergence and flourishing of Western civilisation to the dilemmas now confronting us.
