Living Without Nuclear Weapons: An Urgent International Prospect
Dr Marianne Hanson
The Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty was designed to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as to ensure the disarmament of the nuclear arsenals held by the nuclear weapons states. After 40 years in effect, and ten years of stalemate in the contentious issue of nuclear weapons elimination, the NPT’s five yearly Review Conference recently held in New York represented a fresh opportunity. With new commitment shown by the United States, a commitment which has been supported by other NPT weapons states, expectations were high going into New York.
Marianne Hanson will provide an assessment of the Review Conference as well as other developments in the pursuit of nuclear disarmament.
She was a contributor to the AIIA’s latest Policy Commentary, Nuclear Futures?, which is available to members.
Dr Marianne Hanson is a Reader in International Relations in the School of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Queensland. She gained her Doctorate in International Relations from Hertford College, Oxford University and was Stipendiary Lecturer in Politics at Magdalen College, Oxford, prior to taking up her position at the University of Queensland. Her teaching and research is focused on international security, the role of the United Nations, international law and nuclear weapons’ elimination. She has published widely in these areas, and has contributed recently to conferences held by the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
