Dr Yeo Lay Hwee, Dr Wilhelm Hofmeister, Assoc. Prof. Philomena Murray, Prof. Pascaline Winand, Dr Bruce Wilson, and Dr Stefan Auer.

Although Australia is now a member of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), an organisation that brings together 45 Asian and European heads of government, the issue of Australia’s relations with this organisation has not been much debated.  Speakers will discuss both the institution itself and what Australia's participation will mean.  They will also place ASEM in the larger context of Australia’s place in the Asian and global communities.  Speakers will focus on different aspects of the relationship, utilising their different backgrounds and specialities.  In addition to speaking time, there will be opportunities for the audience to ask questions and discuss issues.

Dr Yeo Lay Hwee is the director of the European Union Centre in Singapore.  Dr Yeo received her PhD from the National University of Singapore, later teaching at NUS and the University of Macau.  She has worked at the Singapore Ministries of Defence and Information and the Arts, the Institute of Policy Studies, the Danish Institute of International Affairs, and the International Institute for Asian Studies.  She also researches at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs.

Dr Wilhelm Hofmeister is the director of the Konrad Adenauer-Stiftung Foundation’s regional programme in Singapore.  He graduated from the University of Mainz before joining KAS and has worked in Brazil and Chile for KAS.  He is a specialist in European-Asian relations.

Dr Philomena Murray is an associate professor in the School of Social and Political Sciences and the former director of the Contemporary Europe Research Centre at the University of Melbourne.  She has studied at the European University Institute in Florence, the College of Europe in Bruges, and the National University of Ireland.  She is a Jean Monnet chair, specialising in Europe-Asia relations.

Dr Pascaline Winand is the professor and director of the Europe and EU Centre at Monash University.  She received her BA and PhD from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, as well as MAs from Yale and Purdue Universities.  She was formerly a professor at the European University Institute, Florence and the Institut d’Etudes Européennes of the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Dr Stefan Auer is the Director of the IUEU Centre at La Trobe University. After receiving his PhD from the University of Melbourne, he joined University College Dublin as a lecturer.  He is now a senior lecturer in history and politics at La Trobe, and is a prolific writer on European history and politics.

Dr Bruce Wilson is a professor of Organisational and management studies and former dean of RMIT’s School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning.  He is now Director of the European Union Centre at RMIT, and Co-Director of the PASCAL International Observatory.
