A jostling for power and position is taking place around the world as the US under President Obama seeks to rebuild its image and influence in the face of an array of problems.
The wider Middle East remains a sea of trouble, China is rising to challenge Western interests from East Asia to Africa, rogue regimes from Pyongyang and Teheran to Khartoum and Caracas defy sanction, and economic and financial uncertainty is pervading global markets.
The more we hear about these and other big issues in today's globalised world, the more difficult it can be to make sense of them.
No Australian international journalist has devoted more time to reporting, analysing and commenting on global concerns than Tony Walker, international editor of the 'Australian Financial Review'.
In the course of 30 years as a foreign correspondent variously for the 'Financial Times', ‘The Age' and the 'Australian Financial Review', Mr Walker has interviewed many of the famous figures who have shaped the world of the 21st century. He has reported many historic events, and gained a first-hand feel for the ways of the world from his bases in Beijing, Cairo, Washington, DC, and elsewhere.
Today, in an address enriched with anecdotes, Mr Walker shares with AIIAV his insights into what is really going on in the world.
