THE 2010 AUSTRALIA-INDIA STRATEGIC LECTURE
The Indian Ocean: navigating beyond rivalry
The Indian Ocean has moved to the fore of global security debate. This sea change in strategic priorities is being driven by diverse challenges including piracy, terrorism, resource insecurity, state instability and – above all – the rising power of China and India, with their growing maritime capabilities and vulnerabilities. But how should we treat the claim that the Indian Ocean is an inevitable theatre of strategic rivalry? How manageable are major-power tensions in this region? And what should be the roles of important maritime players India and Australia in ensuring that the Indo-Pacific century is an era of cooperation and prosperity?
One of India’s leading strategic commentators, Siddharth Varadarajan, will address these and related questions in the 2010 Australia-India Strategic Lecture. The presentation will be preceded by an opportunity to meet the speaker and followed by a question & answer session.
Details of the event are as follows:
Date: Monday, 28 June 2010
Time: 6.00pm – Drinks, canapés and meet the speaker
6.45pm – 8.00pm Presentation
Venue: Ground Floor, Banquet Hall, University of Western Australia Club
