New Government in Japan
The national election in Japan and the subsequent landslide victory by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) last year had been hailed by many commentators as the beginning of a new era in Japanese politics. Yet ten months later the DPJ is in disarray and facing the prospect of losing seats I the forthcoming Upper House election. In rather dramatic circumstances Prime Minister Yukio Hatayama was forced to resign in June to stop the dramatic slide in opinion polls. He was the fourth Prime Minister to resign in four years. This lecture will examine the extraordinary twists and turns in Japanese politics and consider their implications for the Australia-Japan bilateral relationship. Dr Walton has indicated that he will be pleased to take questions on these issues.
