The Indian Ocean: navigating beyond rivalry
The Indian Ocean has moved to the fore of global security debate. This sea change in strategic priorities is being driven by diverse challenges including piracy, terrorism, resource insecurity, state instability and – above all – the rising power of China and India, with their growing maritime capabilities and vulnerabilities. But how should we treat the claim that the Indian Ocean is an inevitable theatre of strategic rivalry? How manageable are major-power tensions in this region? And what should be the roles of important maritime players India and Australia in ensuring that the Indo-Pacific century is an era of cooperation and prosperity? One of India’s leading strategic commentators, Siddharth Varadarajan, will address these and related questions in the 2010 Australia-India Strategic Lecture. The presentation will be preceded by an opportunity to meet the speaker and followed by a question & answer session.

Siddharth Varadarajan is the strategic affairs editor of The Hindu, India’s most respected English-language newspaper. He has reported on such major global stories as the NATO war against Yugoslavia, the destruction of the Bamyan Buddhas by the Taliban, the war in Iraq and the crisis in Kashmir. After studying economics at the London School of Economics and Columbia University, he taught at New York University before joining the Times of India as an editorial writer. He joined The Hindu in 2004. The UN Correspondents’ Association has awarded him its Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize Silver Medal for articles on the Iran nuclear issue.
The Australia-India Strategic Lecture series was established in 2007 by the Lowy Institute for International Policy, and is supported by the Australia-India Council.
