Melbourne is well placed to start reaching its potential as an international city, with many areas of comparative advantage. Its educational institutions attract tens of thousands of students from many countries. State-of-the-art convention, exhibition, sporting and cultural facilities are home to many major international events. It is headquarters for a number of global corporate companies including those in the resources industry, is Australia's bio-medical science centre, and a big player in the export of architectural innovation, engineering and environmental services, information technology, and accounting and legal advice.
With its reputation for "liveability", and a population growth that may see Melbourne regain its old status as Australia's first city, the future seems promising. So, how is Melbourne making the most of its strengths in the global context? How is it dealing with its weaknesses?
To scrutinise our city's international outlook and potential, we are pleased to welcome the CEO of the Committee for Melbourne, Mr Andrew MacLeod, whose organisation has done much over the years to promote the city abroad.
Andrew MacLeod worked as a marine litigation attorney in Melbourne, Sydney and London before being recruited by the International Committee of the Red Cross to deal with military factions in Yugoslavia and Rwanda. He was previously a senior adviser on disaster management for the United Nations, running high level humanitarian teams under great pressure to deliver results in the most arduous of circumstances, crossing cultures, borders and front lines of battle. In these roles Mr MacLeod served in Bosnia, Kosovo, Serbia, East Timor, Pakistan, Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Most recently he was the head of humanitarian investment and political risk analysis at Responsible Investment.
Mr Macleod is the recipient of Australia's Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal, the Silver Medal for Humanity for work in the Balkans, the Australian Davos Connection Leadership Award, and a silver medal from the world masters games. As CEO of the Committee for Melbourne, Mr MacLeod is a representative on the advisory board for the UN Global Compact Cities Programme, the ADC Cities Summit and People, Productivity, Planet.
