Apart from its involvement in two major war theatres, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as having troops tied up in South Korea, the Obama Administration faces significant foreign policy challenges. These include its relations with its two principal Middle East allies, Israel and Turkey; concerns about the resurgence of Russia as it seeks to regain global influence, and unease over China. The United States is also looking to rekindle its relationships with Australia's neighbour Indonesia.
An interesting discussion on this subject will be led by Dr Brendon O'Connor, associate professor in American Politics at the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.
