The aviation industry today is safer and technologically more advanced than at any point in its history. Demand for air travel across the global economy is at record levels and continues to grow strongly. Downstream industries are deeply dependent on airline services and prosper from their association with the aviation industry. Yet the aviation industry itself is in a permanent state of financial crisis. Many airlines are technically insolvent and survive only as instruments of Government policy operating under the protection of international treaties. Governments around the world take a very active interest in aviation – in many cases from diametrically opposed philosophical positions. Where to from here?
Tony is General Manager Group, Government and Industry Affairs for Qantas. In this role he is responsible for the Group’s on-going relations with Government and Industry. Prior to joining Qantas he worked with the Australian Federal Government as Assistant Secretary of the then Department of Transport and Regional Services. In that role he was responsible for the oversight, management and development of economic regulatory policy for Australia’s international, domestic, regional and rural air services. He was also Australia’s chief international air services negotiator responsible for the negotiation and administration of international treaties governing airline services to and from Australia.
