Australia is a founding member of the United Nations and has been a member of the Security Council of several different occasions since 1945. It was last a member of the Council in 1986-87 and is now seeking a place on the Council for 2013-14. Dr Trood will discuss the background to Australia’s bid, placing it in the context of our long standing commitment to the United Nations and its important role in world affairs. He will explain the rather complex procedures for election to a seat on the Security Council, the motivations behind Australia’s campaign and seek to evaluate our prospects for success.

Dr Russell Trood is the Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Australia for Eastern Europe and an Adjunct Professor in the Defence and Security Program, US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. He recently completed a term as a Liberal Senator for Queensland in the Australian Parliament. While serving in the Senate, Dr Trood was a very active member of several parliamentary committees, serving terms as Chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and of the Senate Select Committee on the Reform of the Federation. He was also a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, among others.

All events are free for AIIA members. Guests are welcome at the event and can pay $10 on the night ($5 for students). Drinks are available for purchase at the event, as well as copies of our latest policy commentary (which are free for our members).

All events are held at Harris Terrace (46 George St, Brisbane), unless otherwise specified.
