The media coverage of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, better known as CHOGM, was below its normally poor levels, despite the fact the Commonwealth of Nations represents 54 independent countries, two billion people and one fifth of world trade. Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who hosted CHOGM, says Australia is a “committed member.”
While the media played up the protests, CHOGM committed to the appointment of a commissioner responsible for democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
Such an appointment – whose job description has yet to be decided - will inevitably address a number of issues in countries such as Pakistan and Zimbabwe, and possibly also Australia.
The proposal came from a report of an Eminent Persons’ Group, in which Australia’s very eminent person was retired Justice Michael Kirby, who, of course, is anything but retired. He was in Perth to see the group’s recommendations through.
The AIIA NSW will welcome Justice Michael Kirby to our penultimate meeting of the year on November 29. We are delighted to be able to host one of Australia’s most distinguished citizens.
He will talk about what the Eminent Persons Group seeks to achieve with its recommendations, its chances of success and the future of the Commonwealth. Perhaps the first question is how Australia should approach this change? He will also discuss two recent biographies.
Copies of his biography “Michael Kirby, Paradoxes and Principles” by A.J Brown and an autobiography “Michael Kirby, a Private Life” will be available for purchase as signed copies.
THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED, AND NO FURTHER PLACES ARE AVAILABLE EXCEPT TO GOLD CARD MEMBERS OF THE AIIA
