The question of refugees and asylum seekers is a current political topic in Australia. Our November meeting gives us chance to consider and discuss the issues, and hear from a young woman who has settled in Australia as a refugee from Afghanistan, where Australian troops are currently deployed.
We will also have representatives from Young UN Women Australia Perth telling us about their work for improving the circumstances of young women in Afghanistan and around the world.
About the speaker:
Samira Nabizadah is a 22-year-old refugee from Herat, Afghanistan. She migrated to Australia with her family at the age of eleven, with two older brothers and a sister. As a graduate from Perth Modern High School she is currently working as a receptionist but wishes to pursue a career in the Police Force in the near future. Samira went back home to Afghanistan three years ago and admits it was a wake-up call.
