The Universal Language of Sport and the
Importance of Football to Australia’s
International Relations
Mr Ian Brusasco AM is an inaugural member of the Queensland Academy of Sport, and has extensive experience in sport administration. He has also served as President of the Queensland Soccer Federation, Executive Member and Senior Vice President of the Australian Soccer Federation and Executive Member and Vice President of the Oceania Football Confederation.
Ian's career outside of sport is equally impressive. While running a number of successful pharmacies, Ian served as a Brisbane City Council Alderman for 14 years. He chaired the Health Committee and Planning Committee of the progressive Clem Jones Council in the 1960s and early 1970s. He is a life member of the ALP and is widely credited with giving the Queensland branch of the party a very secure financial base for the foreseeable future.
More recently, Ian held positions as the Chairman of the Port of Brisbane Corporation, 4TAB, 4KQ, Director of the Keep Australia Beautiful Council, Queensland Investment Corporation and Queensland BioCapital Funds. Currently, Ian is the Chairman of WorkCover Queensland, the Gladstone Ports Corporation and Foodbank Queensland.
Ian is held in high esteem across the sport, business and health sectors. In 1988 Ian was awarded an Order of Australia AM in recognition of his contribution to Australian soccer and the community. He received the Advance Australia Foundation Award in 1998 for Services to Business, Sport and Community and was awarded the Centenary Medal for distinguished service to business and commerce in 2003. In 2007 Ian was made a Queensland Ambassador for Australia Day and in 2008 was honoured with the Queensland Greats Award.
Ian holds life memberships to the Sportsman's Association of Australia (Queensland Division), the Queensland Soccer Federation, Football Federation Australia and the Brisbane City Soccer Club. Ian also enjoyed a successful career as an athlete, representing Queensland in rugby union.
