In 2000 an Australian citizen returned to Australia to conduct terrorist attacks after undertaking training overseas. In 2001, the 9/11 attacks killed 10 Australians. In 2002, the Bali 1 suicide bombings killed 88 Australians - and the list goes on. At the same time, our foreign policies have made us more of a target. Overseas attacks have not only killed 128 Australian civilians since 2000, but have also influenced our domestic approach to terrorism and security. In Australia, 23 Australians have been convicted of terrorism-related offences since 2000. The question now is - what do we need to be most concerned about - a home-grown Muslim lone wolf, an antipodean Breivik, or external attackers? This presentation will consider these issues, looking at where we have been, and where we now seem to be headed.

Clive Williams works primarily on issues related to terrorism and politically-motivated-violence, and has done so since 1980. His first career was in Australian Military Intelligence. He subsequently worked as a Defence civilian in areas dealing with strategic policy, intelligence and security. Since leaving Defence in 2002, he has been a Visiting Fellow at the ANU’s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, a Visiting Professor at ADFA, and an Adjunct Professor at Macquarie University’s Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism. He has also run masters programs at universities in the US, Taiwan, Japan and Indonesia.
