As political turmoil overtakes one part of the Islamic world after another, one country stands out as a success story: Indonesia. After decades of authoritarian rule, the world's most populous Muslim nation has transformed itself into a functioning democracy with impressive economic growth, a lively media and other signs that here is a model for other Muslim states to follow.
Yet all is not as it seems. Troubling indications of wear and tear are emerging through growing pressures on religious freedom, human rights, the campaign against corruption, and other key elements of democracy. Australians, like Indonesians, need to be very concerned about this trend. It is a reminder that we cannot take the Indonesian Spring for granted.
To analyse developments in our important neighbour to the north we are pleased to welcome the return to AIIAV of Prof. Tim Lindsey, Director, Asian Law Centre, and Director, Centre for Islamic Law and Society, at the University of Melbourne.
Prof. Lindsey is a specialist in Indonesian law, Indonesian politics, Islamic law in South-East Asia, and the bilateral relationship between Australia and Indonesia. He is chair of the Australia-Indonesia Institute, a practising member of the Victorian Bar, and an ARC Federation Fellow. His publications include Indonesia: Law & Society (2nd Edition); Indonesia After Soeharto: Prospects for Reform; Law Reform in Transitional and Developing States; and Corruption in Asia (with Howard Dick). He is a founding editor of the Australian Journal of Asian Law.
