Fear and Envy: Reflections on the Media and the State
Mr Bruce Grant

Stephen House, 32 Thesiger Court, Deakin, ACT
For reasons of national survival, states have long claimed exception from the moral imperatives that constrain individual behaviour, and in doing so, sometimes politicians confuse their own future with that of the state.
In this wide ranging presentation, Bruce Grant assesses the question of national versus self-interest, the role of the media and the future of the state in an evolving international system.
Bruce Grant has a distinguished career as a foreign correspondent, columnist, academic and diplomat. He served as Australia’s High Commissioner to India during 1973-76, and is the author of numerous non-fiction and fictional books, essays and short stories. His publications include such subjects as Indonesia, India, the Australia-US relationship, and more general aspects of Australian foreign policy in regional and world affairs. Mr Grant also served as a consultant to former Foreign Minister Gareth Evans and together they were joint authors of Australia’s Foreign Relations in the World of the 1990s. His contributions to foreign policy and thinking were recognised by the award of a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) by Monash University in December 2003 and a Fellowship of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (FAIIA) in 2010. Mr Grant will be presented with his FAIIA award prior to his address to members.
This event will operate under the Chatham House Rule.
