No nation in Latin America has been more interesting or more perplexing to outsiders these past few years than Venezuela under its larger-than-life President Hugo Chavez.

His so-named Bolivarian revolution, fuelled by oil, has sought to serve the interests of those who put him into power, Venezuela's poor.  Opinion polls still reflect around a 50 per cent approval rating despite a recession, rising crime and declining public services.  The revolution has also pursued an "anti-imperialist" campaign abroad, aimed at the US.

Mr Chavez, now recovering from cancer surgery in Cuba where former President Fidel Castro is a close friend and mentor, faces a re-election campaign next year.  'The Economist' newspaper argues that the "tide of Latin American history has turned against Mr Chavez".  Other commentaries say he will rebound.

To explain the Bolivarian revolution and Mr Chavez's views and prospects we are pleased to welcome the Ambassador of Venezuela, H.E. Mr Nelson Davila.
Mr Davila, who is also accredited to New Zealand, East Timor and Nauru, has held a number of senior positions in the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  With a specialist background in linguistics and communication, he has also served in the Military Academy, the National School of Finance, the Armed Forces School and the National University.
