Foreign policy is one area of government where most issues are bipartisan, as both sides of politics present a united front in pursuit of Australia’s national interest abroad.
Despite this generally bipartisan approach, there are key areas of difference between the Coalition and Labor.
These include the Labor Government’s handling of relationships in our region, the bid for a temporary seat on the United Nations Security Council and the general strategic stance which does not have sufficient focus on the Indian Ocean.
As the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, the experienced and able Julie Bishop is closely engaged in the domestic political debate but is a strong prosecutor of the Coalition’s approach to foreign policy and in her dealings with foreign minister Kevin Rudd.
Julie takes a close interest in Australia’s defence requirements, especially in the Indian Ocean, given the billions of dollars that are invested there by the export-orientated mining and energy industries. Her foreign policy mantra is that maintaining a strong economy and a secure nation are the principal guidelines to foreign policy.
The shadow foreign minister will outline for us the priorities for her portfolio in a Coalition government.
Julie Bishop became a Federal MP in 1998, when she won the Perth seat of Curtin for the Liberal Party. Until then she had been a litigation lawyer, rising to head the Perth practice of Clayton Utz.
Julie joined the Howard government’s ministry in 2003 as minister for ageing, and later was promoted was appointed to Cabinet with the education and science portfolio, and then became minister assisting the prime minister on women’s issues. In opposition she became shadow treasurer, and was elected deputy leader, was moved to the foreign affairs portfolio.
