An ACCESS even open to all.
Reform of financial regulation tops President Obama’s agenda as the United States pursues recovery from the global financial crisis - and Wall Street is squirming. The crisis revealed that everyone is vulnerable to financial capriciousness and that national boundaries do not necessarily define markets. Banks gambled with artificial investment instruments and evaded regulation. And, as huge corporations floundered, governments avoided “financial Armageddon” with bailouts worth billions of dollars – but at what cost? Now, administrations and industry around the world argue about the merits of regulation, while people are subjected to tightening credit and labour markets.
Despite all this, most banks have bounced back, reporting record profits and introducing new investment instruments. As markets regain momentum, a call is heard for international financial regulation of multi-national industries. But how do governments regulate an international financial market? What are the responsibilities of corporations in the face of regulatory inadequacy? What is the role of government at times of financial crisis? And, how justifiable or efficacious is it to bail out organizations that have flouted financial ethics?
To answer these questions, ACCESS is honoured to present Professor Stephen King, Dean of Monash University’s Faculty of Business and Economics. Before joining Monash University, Prof. King was a member of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). He has also been Professor of Economics and Management at the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Business School. In 1985, he received the University Medal from ANU for his undergraduate studies in economics and completed his Ph.D from Harvard University in 1991. Prof. King is also a director and founder of CoRE Research. He specialises in trade practices economics, regulation and industrial organization and chaired the mergers review committee while at the ACCC. His research in industrial economics and regulation is widely published.
