Members of the East Timor Study Tour report on their recent visit.
Participants in the AIIAV study tour which recently visited Timor Leste will report to members on Wednesday 16 June, 2010 on their findings and impressions.
The group travelled widely in Timor Leste and had extensive briefings on a wide range of issues relating to the country’s prospects. Their impressions based on their experiences will be very useful for people wishing to follow in their footsteps.
The tour leader Mr Michael Coultas, OAM, will introduce the team’s report and members will speak on specific elements including the economy and industrial prospects; Australia’s relations with Timor Leste; health and education; overseas assistance (including the role of official development assistance and NGO programs); the prospects for reconciliation between Timor Leste and Indonesia; and youth issues including possible links between young people in Timor Leste and the AIIA’s ACCESS youth program.
Professor Damien Kingsbury, of the School of International and Political Studies at Deakin University, and Ms Rae Kingsbury, both experts on Timor Leste, will attend the meeting and Professor Kingsbury will give a brief overview.
Given the importance of the Australia/Timor Leste relationship to both countries and the great deal of interest in Australia towards developments in Timor Leste, it is expected that there will be considerable discussion arising out of the group’s presentation. Accordingly we have allowed for the meeting to end at 7.30pm
