Australia and the Republic of Korea (also known as South Korea) are strong economic, political and strategic partners with common values and interests in a key part of our region.
Economic relations, in particular, are complementary and growing, with the ROK a big market for Australian minerals, energy and travel and education services. Mr Gerovich, with extensive experience in East Asia over many years, will discuss the numerous links between the two countries including common strategic interests, particularly in seeking a peaceful resolution to tensions on the Korean peninsula.
Both countries have important alliances with the US and both have made significant and practical contributions to efforts to secure regional security and stability, such as sending troops to Afghanistan, Iraq and East Timor and conducting counter-piracy operations. Cooperation on international affairs, for example in the G20, has also reinforced the partnership.
The ambassador will also provide insights into relations between South and North Korea and on Mongolia.
Mr Gerovich was appointed to Seoul two years ago and is concurrently non-resident ambassador to North Korea and Mongolia. Before this posting Mr Gerovich was First Assistant Secretary for North Asia in Canberra after a number of senior positions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which he joined in 1972. He has been Consul-General in Shanghai, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission in Beijing and Counsellor in Tokyo
