AIIA Member Dr Kenneth Chern will look at the Japanese domestic and international response to its tsunami and nuclear disasters and the longer term impact on its economy and social and political structures. Among the major question for the rest of the world are the impact on public perceptions of nuclear safety and the questions this raises for energy supply and non traditional sources of energy.
About the speaker:
Dr Kenneth Chern has recently returned to academia as Professorial Research Fellow at Murdoch University, following a 27 year career in the US Foreign Service, finishing as US Consul General in Western Australia. He also served in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and as Deputy Director at the Office of the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore Affairs at the US Department of State. He also had postings in Beijing, Taipei, Hong Kong, Manila and Cebu.
Professor Chern has a PhD in the history of US-East Asian relations from the University of Chicago. Before joining the US foreign service he taught at universities in Rochester and Hong Kong
