In the approach to the fourth federal election since the Tampa affair, the questions of asylum seekers and immigration are still a dominant issue in Australian politics. Prime Minister John Howard’s "Pacific Solution" was dismantled by Kevin Rudd, but in recent months the "Indonesian Solution" has sprung up in its stead.
As debates rage about border security, multiculturalism and people smuggling, what is really at stake here? What gives the issue such political currency? What are Australia’s international obligations, and are we fulfilling them?
To discuss these issues, ACCESS is delighted to present two luminaries of the public debate who are prominent defenders of those in search of asylum.
Julian Burnside is one of Australia’s most prominent barristers, predominantly in commercial law and, more recently, in the areas of human rights and refugee advocacy. He has written several books and is a strong supporter of the arts.
Kon Karapanagiotidis is a social worker, lawyer and educator. In 2001 he founded the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, which has grown to become the largest asylum seeker aid, health and advocacy organisation in Australia.
