His Excellency Mr David Daly Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union in Australia will address our first meeting in May. The Ambassador will discuss the topic of “The State of the European Union: Sovereign Debt Crises and Responses”
H.E. David Daly is the Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Australia and to New Zealand. Ambassador Daly has worked in the external relations side of the EU service for almost 20 years and had previously served in the Irish Diplomatic Service. Posted to Canberra in January 2009, Ambassador Daly had previously been the Acting Director in the European Commission responsible for the accession negotiations of Croatia and Turkey to the European Union and for relations between the EU and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. He had been responsible for relations with many countries of the Western Balkans since 2000.
Previously, Ambassador Daly had been posted to Budapest (1996-2000) and had worked as a trade negotiator for the EU (1991-1996) where, inter alia, he had served on a standing disputes settlement and notification panel at the WTO in Geneva (Textiles Monitoring Body). On joining the European Commission, Ambassador Daly worked first in the Agricultural policy area (1989-1991). In the Irish public service Ambassador Daly served in the Irish Embassy in New Delhi, India, in the Department of Foreign Affairs, Dublin and in the Irish Department of Agriculture, Dublin.
Ambassador Daly has a Masters Degree in Economic Science (European Studies) from Dublin University, Trinity College, Dublin (1987); an Honours degree as Bachelor of Public Administration from University College Dublin (1984), and Graduate Membership of the Institute of Personnel Management, London (1984). He recently followed an Executive Management course in Leadership at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge.
Ambassador Daly comes from Sligo, Ireland, and his interests include sport, especially Gaelic Football and AFL, music, reading and travel. Ambassador Daly is married, with three wonderful children and one wonderful wife!
