With a focus on key global challenges facing Australia and Australian diplomacy in particular,
DFAT Queensland State Director John Michell will examine the underlying reasons giving rise to global challenges facing Australia and describe the role of diplomacy, good governance and the promotion of democracy has and can play in finding solutions.
John Michell is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
(DFAT). Prior to commencing his post as State Director in November 2009, Mr Michell served as the State Director with DFAT in South Australia.
From May 2004 to June 2007 Mr Michell was Australia’s High Commissioner to
Trinidad and Tobago, with non-resident accreditation to thirteen other Caribbean
countries.
Mr Michell has also served abroad as Deputy Head of Mission in Dili, East Timor
(2001-03). He was Deputy High Commissioner in Honiara, Solomon Islands, from
1995-98 and has completed assignments as Chief Negotiator for the Australian-
led Peace Monitoring Group on Bougainville (September-December 1999) and
political adviser to the Solomon Islands Ceasefire/Peace Monitoring Council (August-
December 2000).
Set to be an informative and stimulating session, Global Challenges Facing Australian Diplomacy will take as its starting point a global perspective of Australia's place in the world.
