Annette Shun Wah will be in conversation with Roger Law.
A recent study of 339 young people aged 14 to 17 who live in Sydney's west and south-west suburbs found only one-third of them called themselves Australian even though two-thirds were born here. Instead they identified themselves by their ethnic background. (The study forms part of a report for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The author is Professor Jock Collins, of the University of Technology Sydney.)
Annette Shun Wah will explore the complexities of a migrant identity, as she discusses her work as an Australian broadcaster, writer, film-maker and performer.
Annette Shun Wah is a freelance actor, writer and broadcaster. She has served on Theatre 4a's advisory board since its incorporation in 2004, and is also on the board of the Sydney Writers' Festival.
Nominated for an AFI Award for her performance in Australia's first foreign language feature film, Floating Life, directed by Clara Law; she has also appeared in guest roles on Always Greener, The Young Lions, Packed to the Rafters (2011) and the feature film The Home Song Stories.
Annette's career began in radio, including stints at 2WS (Sydney) and Triple J. She continues to present programs for ABC Local Radio and programs and presents world music for Qantas Inflight.
She has presented and produced television programs for the ABC and SBS including The Noise, Eat Carpet, Imagine, Studio 22, Media Dimensions and The Movie Show.
A former contributor to the Sydney Morning Herald, Annette's writing has been published in various anthologies, including Growing Up Asian in Australia, edited by Alice Pung; Family Journeys published by the National Archives of Australia; Come Away With Me edited by Sarah MacDonald; and the journals Meanjin and Life Writing. Her book, Banquet - Ten Courses to Harmony, co-written with Greg Aitkin won Bronze at the 1999 World Food Media Awards.
