Dr Larkindale, who is nearing the end of his term in Canberra, will provide reflections on the state of the “two government’s one system” that frame the Australia New Zealand relationship
The Australian colonies and New Zealand were in the 19th century sometimes known as the “seven children” of the British Empire. Six became the Commonwealth of Australia as it is today, while New Zealand moved away. Despite the shared experience of Gallipoli and the Western Front, for much of the first 75 years of the 20th century Australia and New Zealand were more akin to distant cousins than close siblings. Much has changed since then, and today we are well on the way to ever closer integration. What will be the end-state – Two countries; one system?
