Pakistan is a strategically important nuclear-armed nation of some 175 million people, located at the cross roads between South and Central Asia, and a neighbour of India, Afghanistan, Iran and China. Pakistan is a key player in regional security issues, but faces a number of significant long term security challenges. These include the resolution of the longstanding disputes with India on border issues, water security, and especially Kashmir, and its role in influencing military and political outcomes in Afghanistan.
In addition to these external security challenges, Pakistan is also facing internal security challenges, mainly in the form of growing Islamic extremism.
ACT Branch President Ian Dudgeon visited Pakistan during 4-12 October 2010 and discussed these issues with a wide range of Pakistan people including politicians, serving and former government and military officials, members of leading think-tanks, academics, journalists and members of the business community. His presentation addresses Pakistan’s security challenges as seen from a Pakistan perspective.
