Over the last year, the Rudd Government has made concerted efforts to build closer strategic and economic relations with New Delhi. However, a key stumbling block remains in pursuing this aim: Australia's refusal to sell uranium to India. In this presentation, Dr Lavina Lee will argue that the time is now right to reconsider Australia's position on this issue as the refusal sell uranium to India is now out of step with international developments, serves no remaining non-proliferation purpose, is counter-productive to Australia's climate change goals and unnecessarily prevents Australia from developing deeper economic and strategic relations with the other rising great power within Asia.
