Join us in wrapping up yet another year with the annual AIIA Christmas party with the Director of the Art Gallery of WA, Stefano Carboni.

Art museums, or public art galleries as they are usually referred to in Australia, have become complex institutions that continuously expand -- physically as well as in their programs -- sometimes to unsustainable levels. While the core mission of an art museum remains what can be summarized into “collecting, displaying and preserving art for the enjoyment and education of the public”, the harsh competition in the world of culture and the arts and the need to deliver high attendance numbers has dramatically changed its general business. In order to survive, the art museum has become an immersive experience where one expects to enjoy a good meal or a drink, see a good educational movie, have a guided tour at your fingertips through an i-phone app, have a say on your experience via Facebook or Twitter while you visit the galleries, park your children in the crèche or special playground area, and charge your credit card on the latest design and jewelry products in the shop. Whether this enriches the core experience of viewing and appreciating art or it provides a distraction and deterrent to it is an ongoing matter of speculation. The talk will address the issues above from the international and national perspective and what it means leading an art museum.
