Professor Geoffrey Garrett, CEO of the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, will discuss the state of US foreign policy one year into Obama's presidency. Professor Garrett will discuss the progress Obama has made towards major US foreign policy objectives, the challenges that lie ahead and the constraints Obama faces. He will also explore the significance of Obama's upcoming visit to Australia in the context of the US's evolving foreign policy in the Asia-Pacific and what it means for the Australia-US alliance.

Professor Garrett is the founding CEO of the United States Studies Centre and Professor of Political Science at the University of Sydney. He was previously President of the Pacific Council on International Policy in Los Angeles and before that Dean of the UCLA International Institute.

Professor Garrett is author of Partisan Politics in the Global Economy, editor of The Global Diffusion of Markets and Democracy, both published by Cambridge University Press, and over fifty articles in the world's leading social science journals. He has held academic appointments at Oxford, Stanford and Yale universities and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Pacific Council on International Policy.

Professor Garrett holds a BA (Hons) from the Australian National University and an MA and PhD from Duke University in North Carolina, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
