Peter Kennedy covered the political scene in WA for the ABC for the past 10 years. Nothing much went on here that Peter missed, and reported on fully. Now he’s retired, we’ve asked him to come and speak frankly to us about his observations on how the state – and Australia more widely - has developed and dealt with an increasingly complex set of challenges and opportunities coming from other countries – in our immediate neighbourhood and beyond.
About the Speaker:
Peter is Perth born and educated, graduating from the University of WA with a Bachelor of Arts (economics major) and a Diploma of Education. He started in journalism at The West Australian in 1970. He joined The Sydney Morning Herald in late 1977 and covered NSW politics for the next two years, including the 1978 NSW election. He later transferred to Canberra as chief-of-staff of the Herald's Press Gallery bureau at Parliament House.
Peter returned to Perth in 1984 as Press Secretary to then Deputy Premier, Mal Bryce, before re-joining The West Australian as a political writer. He moved to the ABC in 1990, first with Radio 720, where he presented both the Morning and Drive programs, before becoming the state political reporter for ABC TV News in 2000 -- a position he held until December 2010.
