The WHO, Australia and Public Health Challenges
Asian Bird Flu, Swine Flu, Mad Cow Disease, The re-emergence of Polio – a few of the international health challenges which face Australia. What is coming next, and how are we positioned to deal with coming threats? What is the role of the World Health Organisation?
About the Speaker:
Dr Bill Kean has recently returned to Perth from the World Health Organisation in Geneva, where he was Executive Director of the Office of the Director General – in the middle of it all.
He studied medicine at UWA in the 1960s, followed by study in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Fellowship in Public Health. A short period of clinical practice was followed by work with the Federal Government on migrant health. He joined the WHO in 1985 and worked in the Philippines and the South Pacific, was the WHO Representative in China 1988-1993, before returning to Manila, and then had 10 years with the WHO in Geneva, working, inter alia, on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and the International Health Regulations.
