| Institutes of International Affairs as Agents of International Diffusion |

At the 54th International Studies Association Annual Convention held in San Francisco, AIIA Director Melissa Conley Tyler convened a roundtable of representatives of institutes of international affairs from 12 countries to discuss their role facilitating dialogue between the public and policy makers, acting as knowledge-brokers and providing space for second track dialogue. Roundtable participants presented on institutes’ roles as agents of international diffusion and shared specific recommendations for improving their institutes’ impact. Outputs include an improved sense of the common themes and challenges faced by institutes of international affairs as agents of diffusion and the different ways that institutes deal with these common issues. This roundtable followed on from successful roundtables at the 2010 and 2012 ISA Conventions and an earlier meeting of 39 institute representatives in 2008 at the Australian Institute of International Affairs’ 75th Anniversary National Conference. | Indonesia Australia Dialogue | 03-04 Mar 2013 |
The annual Indonesia-Australia Dialogue was held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Sydney, on Sunday 3 March and Monday 4 March. The Indonesia-Australia Dialogue initiative was jointly announced by leaders during the March 2010 visit to Australia by Indonesian President Yudhoyono as a bilateral second track dialogue to enhance people-to-people links between the two countries. The objective of the Indonesia-Australia Dialogue was to facilitate people-to-people links through discussion on a broad range of topics. Discussions covered domestic, regional and global issues and explored opportunities for closer engagement in business, culture, education, science and technology. This, the second Indonesia-Australia Dialogue, was co-convened by Mr John McCarthy, AIIA National President and former Ambassador to Indonesia, and Dr Rizal Sukma, Executive Director of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. The AIIA was again selected by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to act as secretariat following its performance at the inaugural Dialogue. Indonesian participants include the former Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda, the Chief Editor of the Jakarta Post, Meidyatama Suryadiningrat, and Sandra Hamid from the Asia Foundation. Australian participants include Stephen Creese from Newcrest Mining, Professor Tim Lindsay from the University of Melbourne and former Australian of the Year, burns specialist Professor Fiona Wood. Roundtable with Mozambique President HE Armando Emilio Guebuza

The AIIA was delighted to receive His Excellency Armando Emilio Guebuza, President of the Republic of Mozambique, for a roundtable discussion followed by a light lunch on Thursday 14 March 2013. The Presidential Party was accompanied by HE Graeme Wilson, High Commissioner to South Africa, Mozambique and numerous other African countries. Nine ambassadors and high commissioners from African and Portugese speaking countries were also in attendance as well as representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Austrade, AusAID, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, the Australia Africa Business Council, the Minerals Council of Australia, the University of Melbourne, Flinders University and ANU. Topics of discussion leading from the President's opening remarks included the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Community of Portugese Language Countries (CPLP) as well as bilateral relations. The AIIA was very pleased with the excellent response to the event and the discussion that ensued. On 19 February 2013, the AIIA hosted a highly successful Forum on Former Ministers for Foreign Affiars, following the well-received forum in February 2010 discussing the life, work and achievements of The Right Honourable R. G. Casey. The Forum in 2013 brought together some of Australia’s most eminent academics and experts in international relations, and former senior diplomats and government officials to discuss the life, work and achievements of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs serving in the period of 1960-72. The Forum focused on their individual contributions and influence on Australian foreign policy thinking. |

| Inaugural Wollongong Town Hall Meeting | 24 May 2012 |
The Australian Institute of International Affairs, in partnership with the University of Wollongong and the Wollongong City Council, invited members of the public to attend its inaugural Town Hall meeting on international affairs in Wollongong. The general public was invited to join expert speakers to discuss the forthcoming White Paper on Australia in the Asian Century. This was a chance to get involved in the national debate about transformations in the Asian region and learn about the White Paper process from experts in the field. The purpose of this event was to give the audience the opportunity to engage directly in an important national debate. |

Roundtable participants presented on institutes’ current and potential use of new technologies and shared specific recommendations for improving their institutes’ impact. Outputs include an improved sense of how new technologies have affected institutes of international affairs as civil society organisations. This roundtable followed on from a successful roundtable at the 2010 ISA Convention and an earlier meeting of 39 institute representatives in 2008 at the Australian Institute of International Affairs’ 75th Anniversary National Conference.

| The Smart Power Capability Requirements of a Middle Power | 15 Feb 2012 |
On Wednesday February 15, the AIIA hosted a seminar on the topic "The Smart Power Capability Requirements of a Middle Power". The seminar brought together influential figures from government, defence, industry, academia and the media to examine Smart Power in an Australian context and to discuss its utility in promoting Australian national interests internationally. Findings and recommendations of the seminar will be presented in a report to government. |

"Global Korea, Global Australia" Roundtable Forum |

On Tuesday February 14, the AIIA and the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) held a Roundtable Dialogue on the topic “Global Korea, Global Australia”. The event offered a unique opportunity to discuss Australia’s and South Korea’s relationship and their current and future challenges. IFANS is a sister institute to the AIIA and carries out in-depth studies on issues related to Korean foreign policies and international relations in order to contribute to the formulation of policy. |

Indonesia-Australia Dialogue |

The Indonesia-Australia Dialogue initiative was jointly announced by leaders during the March 2010 visit to Australia by Indonesian President Yudhoyono, as a bilateral second track dialogue. The Indonesia-Australia Dialogue was designed to help build relationships between leaders in a range of fields, and develop their understanding of the breadth and possibilities of the relationship. Discussions covered domestic, regional and global issues and explored opportunities for closer engagement in business, science and technology. The 2011 Indonesia-Australia Dialogue was co-convened by Mr John McCarthy, AIIA National President and former Ambassador to Indonesia, and Dr Rizal Sukma, Executive Director of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta. The AIIA was selected by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to act as secretariat for the Dialogue.

The AIIA was one of the organisations that supported an event held at Parliament House to commemorate the International Day of Peace. Hosted by Ms Melissa Parke MP, the event focused on the development of the Global Peace Index with a presentation by Steve Killelea AM on the topic: Peace and Human Potential: What We Can Learn from Measuring Peace with responses by Professor Don Aitkin AO, Chairman, National Capital Authority and Dr Hugh Craft, Chair of the Commonwealth Roundtable. Forum on Public and Citizen Diplomacy |

A Forum on Public and Citizen Diplomacy was held in Canberra on 6-7 June 2011 hosted by the Australian Institute of International Affairs and the Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy at ANU in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Public Diplomacy Branch. The event was supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ian Potter Foundation, the National Film and Sound Archive and the Embassy of the Netherlands.The Forum brought together a variety of government officials, academics, professionals and other experts to discuss, debate and engage with the many contemporary issues in public and citizen diplomacy. The object of the Forum was to addressthe role of public and citizen diplomacy in shaping Australia’s image in the world.

| Launch of Global Peace Index | 26 May 2011 | The AIIA was one of the organisations that supported the Australian launch of the Global Peace Index: http://www.economicsandpeace.org/. The Global Peace Index is the first-ever analysis to rank countries on their peacefulness and identify potential determinants of peace. Its aim is to understand the factors that create and sustain peace. A panel made up of Professor Hugh White, Dr Hugh Craft and Dr Victoria Mason was moderated by Don Aitkin. |

The History of Australia's Involvement with the United Nations |

A forum on The History of Australia’s Involvement with the United Nations (UN) jointly hosted by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) was held in Canberra on 1-2 February 2011. The Forum brought together government officials, academics and other experts to debate and engage with the issues that continue to shape Australia-UN relations today. The object of the Forum was to examine Australia’s role in the UN from inception to the present day, including significant issues related to the UN, both past and present. A book of research is in preparation for release by the DFAT Historical Publications and Information Section in September 2011.

On 19 October 2010, the AIIA hosted a National President's Forum on "Australia and the Chinese Century ?" at Parliament House in Brisbane. The Forum brought together government officials, academics, journalists, professionals and other experts to discuss, debate and engage with the many contemporary issues which shape Australia-China relation today. The forum was preceded by a public forum moderated by the Asutralian Financial Review China Correspondent Colleen Ryan.

Australia Joins the Asia-Europe Meeting |

On 9 and 10 August 2010, AIIA National Office in conjunction with AIIA VIC and AIIA ACT Branch hosted two events concerning Australia and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). The event was organised with a significant help from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS). The event stimulated discussion on the meaning of Australia’s participation in ASEM from October 2010 and addressed current trends in ASEM’s direction, including institutional structure, agenda and authority. At both events there was considerable discussion about the internal dynamics of ASEM and on the process of potential enlargement. The Symposia increased publicity for ASEM and improved understanding about ASEM from multiple viewpoints.

In order to examine their respective involvements in international affairs, delegations from Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa and South Korea joined with the AIIA in Jakarta, Indonesia from 25th-26th May 2010 at an event supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Topics included the responsibilities of regional powers, the dealing with global powers, global challenges and building a global system that is accommodating of these countries’ needs and priorities. |

The AIIA hosted a roundtable “Connecting Theory and Policy: Reflecting on the Work of Institutes of International Affairs” at the 51th Annual Convention of the International Studies Association in New Orleans, Thursday 18 February, 2010. This roundtable event brought together institutes of international affairs from Australia, Germany, Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Israel, Mexico, Chile and the USA to discuss the role that such institutes play in crossing the divide between theory and practice in international affairs. |

R.G. Casey Forum - "R.G Casey as Minister for External Affairs 1950-1960, Fifty Years On" |

On the 9th February 2010, the AIIA National Executive hosted a forum to discuss the life, work and achievements of The Right Honourable R. G. Casey, later Lord Casey, as Australia's Minister for External Affairs from 1951 to 1960. The Forum brought together some of Australia's most eminent academics and experts in international relations, former senior diplomats and government officials from various organisations, fifty years after R. G. Casey retired from politics.

Assisting Disrupted States: Lessons Learned and Future Prospects |

The Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy and the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) held a joint public forum on Assisting Disrupted States on 29 October, 2009. The forum was launched by the National Executive Director, Melissa Conley Tyler at the AIIA Stephen House Conference Room. While the esteemed speakers addressed a broad scope of issues pertaining to disrupted states, Lieutenant General John Sanderson AC also gave his fellowship address and received his Fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (FAIIA) award.

The symposium aimed to update energy, national security, international relations and emergency service practitioners on developments which effect domestic and international continuity of energy supply and to develop cross-practitioners personal networks which allow information to be accessed and shared.

The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) hosted National President's Forum held in Adelaide on 5 May 2009. The Forum conducted discussion about President Obama's foreign policy and its implication in Australia and its regions by a select group of experts on international relations, American Studies and Security. The Forum enabled participants to engage in dynamic discussions about key themes like the Obama Administration's emerging priorities, the new US foreign policy agenda and immediate challenges, along with international expectations of the Obama presidency.

Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) hosted a half-day public forum on "Australia's Role in Democracy Promotion" in Canberra on 14 March 2008. The forum identified and brought together the range of actors - parliamentarians, government officials, political parties and independent bodies - engaged in promoting and enhancing democracy abroad to discuss Australia's role in democracy promotion both in Australia and overseas.
