Event will commence at 5.50pm.

The deep-set problems in Italy are at the heart of the eurozone’s financial crisis – and there is now no other word than crisis for the current trauma.  Despite having the eurozone’s third largest economy, Italy’s economy is shrinking, and it has suffered a number of recessions since joining the euro.  With huge fiscal adjustments due to kick in 2012 – mostly additional taxes, cuts to pension entitlements and other cuts to government spending - the already fragile economy faces a very uncertain future.

Italy is too big to be bailed out by other EU members, and neither the US nor China show any enthusiasm to step up, so Italy’s new government faces a difficult task to reform its economy and political system and introduce growth-boosting reforms.

Does the new technocratic Government led by Mario Monti – which, uniquely, does not feature a single elected politician - have the strategic and political will to see through necessary liberalisation and restructuring measures?  Will the main political parties and the public support such changes?

And is the European project itself under threat and are the European leaders willing to make the tough decisions to resolve the situation?

To discuss these issues, the Institute is delighted to welcome Professor Pasquale Sgro.  Professor Sgro is the Associate Dean for Research at Deakin University’s Faculty of Business and Law.  He is an economist and has research interest in international trade and growth theory.
